In an increasingly complex and mobile society there is a requirement for population statistics to be produced more flexibly to accommodate a range of analyses: in addition to the usual residence base (where people usually live), one alternative output base is the out of term population (where students and school children are recorded at their ‘home’ address). This story analyses data for the out of term population by age, sex and geographical breakdown.

The tables in this release provide information on key characteristics of the out of term population of England and Wales such as language, qualifications, industry, occupation and general health. There are 21 tables in total in this release - 20 tables are available for Output Areas (OA) and 1 table is available for Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA) in England and Wales.

The release is supported by the analysis ‘The Out of Term Population of England and Wales: An Alternative 2011 Census Population Base’.
