Online Shop | Office for National Statistics (ONS) | Foreign Direct Investment - Business Monitor MA4

Foreign Direct Investment - Business Monitor MA4 provides estimates during the survey year on Foreign Direct Investment flows, positions and earnings involving UK companies, broken down by continent, country, component and industry. The investment figures are published on a net basis, that is, they consist of investments net of disinvestments. The estimates in this publication are sourced principally from the Office for National Statistics’ comprehensive annual surveys into foreign direct investment.

The foreign direct investment inquiries are carried out by the Economic Surveys Division of the ONS, in collaboration with other government departments and the Bank of England.

Investment of UK companies abroad (outward) and foreign companies into the UK (inward), including investment flows, positions and earnings, by country, component and industry.

Main points
 • Foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics for 2020 were affected by disruption from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and changes to statistical populations and sampling methods.
 • We have introduced new information from a commercial data source to inform the FDI populations and stratification method; this has seen the number of companies in both populations increase in 2020 compared with 2019, and we recommend using caution when interpreting 2020 statistics.
 • Both the outward and inward FDI stocks increased in 2020 compared with 2019; the value of the UKs inward FDI position increased the most, by £288.7 billion (17.6% higher), while the outward stock increased by £13.5 billion (0.8% higher).
 • The total value of the UKs outward FDI earnings (profits) halved, falling from £101.7 billion in 2019 to £50.8 billion in 2020; this was not evenly spread across industries, with outward FDI earnings increasing in manufacturing, and information and communications over that period.
 • The value of inward FDI earnings in professional and support industries was nearly five-times higher in 2020 than in 2019, mainly from a few companies.

Investment of UK companies abroad (outward) and foreign companies into the UK (inward), including investment flows, positions and earnings, by country, component and industry.

Main points

The UK’s net (outward less inward) foreign direct investment (FDI) earnings fell to £21.4 billion in 2018, compared with £30.4 billion in 2017; increases for earnings from inward FDI with the EU and Americas contributed to this fall.

Inward FDI earnings rose from £57.7 billion in 2017 to £72.7 billion in 2018, the highest annual increase since 2006; growth in the "retail and transport", "professional and support" and "manufacturing" industrial groups accounted for 88.3% of the £15.0 billion increase.

Outward FDI earnings rose from £88.1 billion in 2017 to £94.1 billion in 2018, with the "manufacturing" (£21.2 billion), "financial services" (£19.8 billion), and "mining and quarrying" (£18.5 billion) industrial groups accounting for the three highest values in the 2018 total.

The (inward) stock of FDI in the UK controlled by foreign companies increased by £128.1 billion, from £1,392.5 billion in 2017 to £1,520.6 billion in 2018; this was higher than the £39.6 billion increase in the (outward) stock of investment controlled abroad by UK-based companies, from £1,369.1 billion to £1,408.7 billion.

The UK’s net FDI position was negative £111.9 billion in 2018, which partly reflects higher inward FDI positions with the Americas, Non-EU Europe and Asia, compared with 2017.

Investment flows, positions (stocks) and earnings, inward (to the UK from abroad) and outward (by UK companies abroad) by country, component and industry.

Main Points
 • The value of the UKs Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) positions abroad (outward investment) increased from !!<£1,084.0 billion in 2015 to £1,212.8 billion in 2016, which is partly explained by the depreciation in the pound sterling exchange rate.

The value of FDI positions held by foreign investors in the UK (inward investment) increased from £1,032.5 billion in 2015 to £1,199.5 billion in 2016, which is largely explained by a pickup in inward mergers & acquisitions activity.

Geographical breakdowns presented in this bulletin show that the rise in both inward and outward FDI positions in 2016 was mostly attributable to Europe. For outward, this was due to increases across most European countries, with Luxembourg and the Netherlands seeing the largest growth. The majority of the rise in inward FDI positions from Europe were mainly attributable to large inward flows in 2016.

Net earnings from direct investment abroad by UK companies (outward earnings) fell from £57.2 billion in 2015 to £50.4 billion in 2016. This is the fifth consecutive fall since 2011 and largely reflects the continued fall in the rate of return the UK generates on its outward FDI.

Net earnings from direct investment in the UK (inward earnings) increased from £48.2 billion in 2015 to £52.1 billion in 2016. The fall in outward FDI earnings and increase in inward FDI earnings has resulted in the UK’s FDI earnings balance becoming slightly negative in 2016 – the first time this has happened since the comparable time series began in 2006.

Net flows of FDI abroad (outward flows) continued to be negative in 2016, with a net disinvestment of £16.5 billion, although this was lower than the £42.9 billion disinvestment recorded in 2015.

Net flows of FDI into the UK (inward flows) increased from £25.3 billion in 2015 to £145.6 billion in 2016, the largest value recorded since the comparable time series began in 2006. The large value of inward FDI flows recorded were dominated by a handful of high-value M&A deals in 2016; large publically reported transactions in 2016 included the acquisitions of SABMiller, ARM Holdings and BG Group.
