Generic Risk Assessment 5.3 examines the hazards, risks and control measures relating to fire and rescue personnel, the personnel of other agencies and members of the public when dealing with incidents involving chemicals.

Key features:

• Examination of the hazards, risks and controls that relate to carrying out decontamination at an incident involving a hazardous substance.
• Incidents of a traditional hazardous material nature, predominantly involving the decontamination of fire crews and equipment.
• Incidents involving terrorist activity and the resultant mass decontamination of casualties.

This assessment does not cover mass decontamination. Depending on the nature and scale of the incident a variety of significant hazards may be present. Therefore contents of other specific generic risk assessments may need to be considered.
