Approved document G - Sanitation, hot water and water efficiency

Approved Document G (ADG) provides guidance on the supply of water to a property, including water safety, hot water supply, sanitation and water efficiency. The guidance focuses on the supply of sanitary, drinkable water to buildings, including cold drinking water, hot water supplied to bathroom appliances including baths, showers and sinks next to toilets (or in an adjoining room) and to food preparation areas in kitchens, and any water needed for the purposes of washing. Hot water systems also require extra safety precautions when they are unvented.

Main Changes in the 2015 Edition
This approved document supports Regulation 36 and Part G of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010. It takes effect on 1 October 2015 for use in England*. The 2010 edition, as amended, will continue to apply to work started before 1 October 2015 or work subject to a building notice, full plans application or initial notice submitted before that date.
The main changes are:

• Introduction of an optional requirement for tighter water effciency in Regulation 36 (section G2).
• Introduction of a fttings approach as an alternative to using the water effciency calculator (section G2).
• Inclusion of the water effciency calculator methodology into this approved document, with minor alterations resulting from European effciency labelling and consequential amendments resulting from removal of references to the Code for Sustainable Homes (Appendix A).
• The annex listing the relevant competent person self-certifcation schemes has been deleted.

Change made by the 2016 Amendments
The change, made to section G2, requires the water effciency calculator to be completed for new dwellings where a shower will not be provided.

Changes made by the 2024 Amendments
The changes update references and make consequential amendments to reflect the Building (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2024 which set out a new requirement in Schedule 1 Part T of the Building Regulations 2010, and the associated guidance in Approved Document T: Toilet accommodation – 2024 edition.
