The tenth edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) i.e. IP 2026 is published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) in accordance with a designed plan to fulfil the requirements of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and Rules thereunder and completed through untiring efforts of the members of Scientific Body of the IPC, members of the Expert Working Groups, IPC Secretariat and Indian Pharmacopoeia Laboratory (IPL). It supersedes the IP 2022 edition but any monograph of the immediately preceding edition of IP (i.e. IP 2022) that does not figure in this edition continues to be official as stipulated in the Second Schedule of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

Presentation
The IP 2026 is presented in four volumes:

• Volume I contain the Notices, Preface, about Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Acknowledgements, Introduction, General Notices, General Chapters, Reference Data and Index.
• Volume II contains the General Notices, General Monographs, Monographs on Drug substances, Dosage forms and Pharmaceutical aids (A to M).
• Volume III contains the General Notices, Monographs on Drug substances, Dosage forms and Pharmaceutical aids (N to Z) followed by and distinguished by colour codes, Monographs on Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, Fatty Acids etc., Phytopharmaceuticals, Herbs and Herbal Products, Vaccines and Immunosera for Human Use, Blood and Blood Related Products, Biotechnology Derived Therapeutic Products, Allergen Products and Radiopharmaceutical Preparations.
• Volume IV contains the General Notices, Notices, Veterinary Monographs and Index. The up-gradation in this edition covers all the amendments released after publication of the IP 2022.

In an effort to make the pharmacopoeia more user-friendly, the design of the texts of the monographs and test methods are kept same. Cross-referencing between the individual monographs has been avoided to make each monograph complete in itself, thus making it convenient to the user.

Changes in 2026 edition
Keeping in view the essential requirement under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules thereunder, the information on the category of a drug, and available usual strengths of dosage forms has been kept in this edition.

A total of 121 new monographs have been added in the current edition. Among the included monographs, 88 are Drug substances, Dosage forms and Pharmaceutical aids (A to Z), 05 Vitamins, Minerals, Amino acids, Fatty Acids etc., 02 Biotechnology Derived Therapeutic products, 03 Vaccines and Immunosera for human use, 02 Blood related products, 20 Blood and blood component monographs and 01 Veterinary Vaccines monograph have been added in this edition.

The IP 2026 marks a significant leap forward with the inclusion of a wide array of monographs catering to therapeutic categories aligned with the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). This edition underscores the commitment to public health needs and global harmonization by introducing monographs across a diverse spectrum of pharmacological classes.
