Depending on the nature and scale of the operational incident a variety of significant hazards may be present.

The hazards to fire-fighters attending radiation incidents is irradiation or contamination from radioactive materials.

Incidents involving terrorist activity and deliberate release are covers in specific procedures (new Dimensions/Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear).

Key features:

• Significant hazards and risks - including radioactive contamination, sealed and unsealed sources, dose limits and constraints
• Key control measures - including training, command and control, protective equipment and decontamination

As with all GRAs, this assessment provides a starting point for FRS to conduct their own assessments and produce their own Safe Systems of Work within the context of local conditions and existing organisational arrangements.
