Description:
This publication provides guidance on how to comply with the Coal Mines (Control of Inhalable Dust) Regulations 2007.

Particularly relevant to:
  • mine owners
  • mine managers
  • any employer with employees who work below ground at coal mines
  • the self-employed contractors working below ground at coal mines.

The Regulations set out requirements for managers to control exposure to inhalable dust, while complying with exposure control limits referring to respirable dust.

'Inhalable dust' includes larger particles of dust that are normally trapped by the clearance mechanisms in the nose, mouth and throat and then cleared from the respiratory tract.

'Respirable dust' refers to the smaller dust particles small enough to avaoid these clearance mechanisms and reach the gas exchange region of the lungs.

In most cases, control of both inahlable and respirable dust goes together and both are important to health protection. However it is the level of respirable dust exposure that is the best way of measuring the likely impact on health.
