Produced by the British Pharmacopoeia Commission Secretariat of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the BP makes an important contribution to public health by setting publicly available standards for the quality of medicines.

The 2013 edition of the British Pharmacopoeia includes nearly 3900 monographs which are legally enforced by the Medicines Act 1968. Where a pharmacopoeia monograph exists, medicinal products sold or supplied in the UK must comply with the relevant monograph.
