The World Investment Report series provides the latest data and analysis foreign direct investment (FDI) and other activities of transnational corporations, as well as the policies to regulate them at the national and international levels.

The 2014 edition of the report traces the key developments in FDI over 2013 and, in its thematic part, presents a framework for facilitating the mobilization of private sector finance for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to policy guidance, the report proposes a number of concrete initiatives for enhancing the role of the private sector.

The report should prove a useful tool for governments, the international community and the business community in their efforts towards contributing to the SDGs.

This report is widely regarded as the most authoritative source of data and analysis on the activities of transnational corporations, national and international regulatory regimes, and their implications for development.

The 2011 edition focuses on the strategic use of non-equity modalities (e.g. contract manufacturing, service outsourcing, licensing, franchising, etc.) by transnational corporations in their management of global value chains and international operations. Additional highlights include a discussion of the interplay between foreign direct investment and industrial policy, as well as an assessment of the origin, rise and global map of state-owned transnational corporations.

It also contains a statistical annex with data on flows and stocks of foreign direct investment for 196 economies.

The World Investment Report 2009, subtitled Transnational Corporations, Agricultural Production and Development analyses two major issues: How have foreign direct investment (FDI) flows reacted to the current financial and economic crisis? How do traditional and new foreign investors - transnational corporations (TNCs) - affect agriculture, the basis of livelihood in many developing countries?

According to the report, after decades of slow growth, TNCs´ interest and participation in agriculture - including FDI - is again on the rise. Despite this increase, in most countries today only a small share of FDI goes to agriculture. Renewed interest by foreign investors in agricultural investment is significant enough to raise questions about whether FDI and other forms of TNC participation in agriculture can contribute to the development of this long neglected industry. WIR 2009 suggests an integrated policy approach that takes into account concerns arising from TNC involvement.

The role of transnational corporations in extractive industries is attracting renewed attention, partly as a result of rising commodity prices and increased demand from emerging economies. This year, the World Investment Report examines TNC’s activities in extractive industries and their development implications.

The Report explores policy options aimed at ensuring tangible and long-term gains for growth and development in developing countries. As usual, the first part of the Report reviews recent developments in global and regional FDI trends. Includes CD-ROM.
