This publication provides headline estimates of the population of Scotland, its council areas and NHS boards as at 30 June 2017 (commonly referred to as mid-2017).

These estimates are based on the Census and are updated annually to account for population change in the period from 1 July to 30 June. Therefore, the period covered by the latest mid-2017 statistics (1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017) is just after the referendum on European Union membership (which took place on 23 June 2016).

The two main contributors to population change are natural change (births minus deaths) and net migration (the difference between long-term moves into and out of Scotland or local areas). More information about the methodology and quality, including strengths and weaknesses, of the estimates published in this release is available in the notes and definitions section of this document and more detailed information in the Mid-year Estimates for Scotland Methodology Guide.

Population estimates are used for a variety of purposes including resource allocation and planning of services such as education and health. They are also used for calculating rates and performance measures, informing local and national policy, weighting surveys and in modelling the economy.

This paper summarises the National Records of Scotland’s (NRS) mid-2015 estimates of the population of Scotland and its administrative areas. It also includes corrected population estimates for Mid-2012, Mid-2013 and 2014. These estimates were corrected due to the discovery of errors mainly affecting the age distribution of the mid-year population estimates for 2002 to 2014.

Key points:
  • The estimated population of Scotland on 30 June 2015 was 5,373,000, the highest ever and an increase of 25,400 from the previous year.
  • There were approximately 2,610,500 males and 2,762,500 females.
  • The population increased because in-migration exceeded out-migration by approximately 28,000 between mid-2014 and mid-2015. Deaths exceeded births by approximately 2,000 and other changes, such as in armed forces and prisoners, resulted in a loss of approximately 500 people.
  • In the year to mid-2015 deaths exceeded births for the first time since the year to mid-2006.

This paper summarises the National Records of Scotland’s (NRS) mid-2014 estimates of the population of Scotland and its administrative areas.

These population estimates are produced using the demographic cohort component method. The estimates are based on the 2011 Census. The population is ‘aged on’ one year (that is, the 0 year olds become 1 year olds, and so on), the number of births in the year are added, the number of deaths subtracted and adjustments are made for estimated migration and other changes in special populations.
