The British Mosque
An architectural and social history
The British Mosque

£54.00

ISBN
9781848020764
Published by
Historic England

Hardback
This book presents the first overview of Muslim architecture in Britain, from the earliest examples in the late 19th century, to the mosques being built today. Key architectural stages are identified and explained alongside the social history of Muslim settlement and growth.
The British Mosque is an architectural as well as a social history, and describes the evolution of Britain’s Muslim communities through the buildings they have built. The architectural story charts a course from the earliest mosques formed from the conversion of houses, to other large-scale conversions through to purpose-built mosques and with these the emergence of an Islamic architectural expression in Britain.More Information

Historic places across the country have shaped England and the world beyond. They are hotbeds of invention, industry and creativity and they bring our nation’s story to life. In 2017 Historic England launched the Irreplaceable: A History of England in 100 Places campaign, designed to celebrate England’s remarkable places.
Guided by public nominations and a panel of expert judges, including Robert Winston, Mary Beard, George Clark, David Olusoga, Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson and Bettany Hughes, we compiled a list of 100 places where remarkable things have happened.
The book, like the campaign, is divided into ten categories ranging from Music & Literature, through Science & Discovery to Power, Protest & Progress. The final 100 places are all contained within this gloriously illustrated book.More Information

The First World War has been described as the first total war, a conflict in which a country’s people and resources were harnessed towards final victory. During 2014-18 Historic England set out to uncover and study the physical remains left across England by the First World War.The range of what was discovered is astonishing, reflecting how the home front became as important as the battlefront. It was the place to train and equip new armies, to manufacture armaments, to treat the wounded and to grow more food. As millions of men joined the armed forces, women entered the workforce in munitions factories, as tram and bus conductresses and as farm workers.
This new book reveals how, a century later, many traces of this great endeavour survive. More Information

In the long and absorbing history of Britain's railways and the men and women who have worked on them, the most challenging years were those of the two world wars. Neither of these wars could have been won without the railways. Transportation of everything that was grown, made or mined, as well as soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians was largely the task of the railways.
This book pays tribute to the way the railways and their staff responded to the demand that they do more with fewer resources. They were called upon to cope with an extraordinary change in the character and volume of passenger and goods traffic, to endure dangerously long hours, and to overcome fear. More Information

For almost a century, from its inception in the years immediately after World War I, the Aerofilms company recorded the changing face of England from the air. At the start of the era, the railway was still the predominant form of transport, with a network of main, secondary and branch lines that stretched to virtually every corner of the realm. As the 20th century progressed, however, this dominance declined as the private motor car and the lorry increasingly became the preferred mode of transport.
Drawing upon 150 images from the collection, Peter Waller explores various aspects of England’s unique railway heritage: from major city stations to the humble goods yard and signal box. More Information

Bandstands
Pavilions for music, entertainment and leisure
Bandstands

£22.50

ISBN
9781848023727
Published by
Historic England

Paperback
In 1833, the Select Committee for Public Walks was introduced so that ‘the provision of parks would lead to a better use of Sundays and the replacement of the debasing pleasures’. Music was seen as an important moral influence and ‘musical cultivation … the safest and surest method of popular culture’. The introduction of the bandstand became significant in the reforming potential of public parks.
This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of these pavilions made for music, discusses the music played within them, their design and manufacture and worldwide influence. The book describes the bandstand’s evolution from ‘orchestras’ in the early 18th century Pleasure Gardens, through the reforming Victorian period, to the post Second World War decline and their subsequent revival in the late 1990s.More Information

Paperback
Liverpool has gained a national and international reputation for popular music, most recently recognised in its designation as a UNESCO City of Music. This book examines Liverpool’s popular music through the history of the places where it has been performed and examines their role and significance. It explores the richness of Liverpool’s live performance scene and tells a story of changing music sites, sounds and experiences. In doing so it highlights music’s contribution to the city’s history and identity, and shows how the city’s architectural and urban form has shaped its musical life and character.
The book shows how music is bound up with changes in the social, cultural and economic life of cities more generally, particularly provincial, ‘post- industrial’ cities in the UK, Europe and US. It also highlights the significance of places that enable people to come together and collectively participate in music events. More Information

Prefabs
The social and architectural history of 20th-century prefabricated housing
Prefabs

Historic England

Paperback
As slums were cleared after the Blitz, there was a pressing need for housing. Successive governments championed prefabrication as a speedy solution. The resulting bungalows with slightly pitched roofs, pretty gardens and all the mod cons became home to hundreds of thousands of people around the country, often those who had not previously had the luxury of hot running water or a fridge. No wonder, then, that they became so loved. These squat little homes were meant to last just a decade - a mere stopgap as the country got back on its feet – but many of the prefabs are still standing, with residents often fighting to hold on to them.
The success of post-war prefab housing is examined in the wider context of British Social housing. The book also looks at architectural innovation and imaginative design in the field of prefabrication and clever solutions being put forward to solve the housing crisis of today. More Information

Expected November 2018
This book is devoted to the seafront, the space between the seaward ends of seaside piers and the first line of buildings. The seafront is a place that is familiar yet unfamiliar, predictable but exciting, natural but artificial. It is a place to live, work and play, a site for commemoration and remembrance. It is ever-changing, depending on the time of day, the state of the tides and the month of the year. And how we perceive it will be shaped by our age, our gender and our childhood memories.
The Seafront describes a highly complex space that has been created, recreated and adapted over the past 300 years. It tells the story of seaside holidays and how the arrival of increasing numbers of tourists transformed natural coastline into the man-made environments of modern resorts. Themes examined range from the engineering of sea defences, to the provision of tourism infrastructure and from facilities for sea bathing to the fun factories and fun fairs of the 20th century.More Information

Robert Adam is perhaps the best known of all British architects, the only one whose name denotes both a style and an era. The new decorative language he introduced at Kedleston and Syon around 1760 put him at the forefront of dynamic changes taking place in 18th-century British architecture. His later claim that his practice with his brother James had effected ‘a kind of revolution’ in design was no idle boast. Their style dominated the later Georgian period and their influence was widespread, not only in Western Europe but in Russia and North America. But for such a well-known figure, much of Robert Adam’s art still remains poorly understood.More Information

Paperback
This is the first overview of the career of Alison and Peter Smithson, the most controversial yet most widely influential of post-war architectural practices. From their first youthful project, the school at Hunstanton, to their final works, they epitomised the idea of the avant garde architect, and were strongly engaged with artists and critics and with groups and tendencies in Britain and beyond.
Lavishly illustrated with new colour images as well as original drawings and historic photography, this book is an essential read for architects, students and enthusiasts for modernism wanting to learn more about the Smithsons.More Information

Arup Associates, a major presence on the British architectural scene for more than half a century, emerged from the famous engineering consultancy founded by Ove Arup in 1946 and reflected Arup’s own vision of ‘total design’, formed in the 1930s in his ground-breaking collaborations with Berthold Lubetkin. With architects, engineers and other professionals working in groups, it offered a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to the design of buildings.
This book, the first monograph on Arup Associates for more than 30 years, discusses the work of the firm from the years of the Arup Building Group in the 1950s to the 1990s and assesses the contribution of its leading designers, including Sir Philip Dowson, Derek Sugden and Peter Foggo. The text is based on interviews with many former and current members of the practice. The book is fully illustrated with images from the Arup archive and stunning new photography offering a new perspective on an exceptional body of work. More Information
