The 'United States Pharmacopoeia - National Formulary (USP-NF)' is a three-volume combination of two official compendia, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the National Formulary (NF). USP-NF is an annual publication, comprising of one main publication and two supplements each year.

The USP-NF provides access to official standards, enforceable by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for drugs and related products manufactured and marketed in the United States. The U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act designates the USP-NF as the official compendia for drugs marketed in the United States.

A drug product in the U.S. market must conform to the standards in USP-NF to avoid possible charges of adulteration and misbranding. The USP-NF is also widely used by manufacturers wishing to market therapeutic products worldwide. Meeting USP-NF standards is accepted globally as assurance of high quality.

Monographs for drug substances and preparations are featured in the USP. Monographs for dietary supplements and ingredients appear in a separate section of the USP. Excipient monographs are included in the NF.

The USP-NF is an essential publication for anyone working in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, dietary supplements, medical devices and gases and veterinary drugs and is also is an important reference for pharmacies, libraries, universities, and schools of medicine and pharmacy.

Six-Month Implementation Guideline
'United States Pharmacopoeia 32 - National Formulary 27' and its Supplements will become official six months after being released to the public. The main edition of the USP-NF, which is released on 1 November, will become official on 1 May 2009.

The two Interim Revision Announcements (IRAs) to the USP-NF are published in February 2009 and June 2009 and become official on the 1 August 2009 and 1 December 2009 respectively.
