IMDG Code Contents

The two-volume Code is divided into seven parts:

Volume 1 (parts 1, 2 and 4-7 of the Code) contains sections on:

• general provisions, definitions, training
• classification
• packing and tank provisions
• consignment procedures
• construction and testing of packagings, IBCs,large packagings, portable tanks and road tank vehicles
• transport operations

• The Dangerous Goods List (equivalent to the schedules in previous editions of the Code), presented in tabular format
• limited quantities exceptions
• the Index
• appendices

What the IMDG Code requires

From January 2010 IMDG Code training is mandatory for all shore-side staff involved in dangerous goods transport by sea.

General awareness/familiarization training

Each person shall receive training designed to provide familiarity with the general provisions of dangerous goods transport provisions.

Such training shall include:

• A description of the classes of dangerous goods
• labelling
• marking
• placarding
• packing
• stowage
• segregation
• compatibility provisions
• A description of the purpose and content of dangerous goods transport documents
(such as the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form and the Container/Vehicle Packing Certificate)


• A description of available emergency response documents.
