IMDG Code Contents

The two-volume Code is divided into seven parts:

Volume 1 (parts 1, 2 and 4-7 of the Code) contains sections on:

general provisions, definitions, training
classification
packing and tank provisions
consignment procedures
construction and testing of packagings, IBCs,large packagings, portable tanks and road tank vehicles
transport operations

Volume 2 contains:

The Dangerous Goods List (equivalent to the schedules in previous editions of the Code), presented in tabular format
limited quantities exceptions
the Index
appendices

What the IMDG Code requires

From January 2010 IMDG Code training is mandatory for all shore-side staff involved in dangerous goods transport by sea.

General awareness/familiarization training

Each person shall receive training designed to provide familiarity with the general provisions of dangerous goods transport provisions.

Such training shall include:

A description of the classes of dangerous goods

labelling
marking
placarding
packing
stowage
segregation
compatibility provisions

A description of the purpose and content of dangerous goods transport documents

A description of available emergency response documents.

Function-specific training

Each person shall receive detailed training concerning specific dangerous goods transport provisions which are applicable to the function that person performs.

Details of all the training undertaken shall be kept by both the employer and the employee.

Training records shall be made available to the competent authority if requested.
