Asbestos-related disease is the biggest occupational health killer in the UK, and over 500 000 industrial, commercial and public buildings are thought to contain asbestos.

Building and maintenance workers (such as plumbers, electricians and carpenters) who carry out work in them are often completely unaware of its presence and can be exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos fibres as a result. The new legal duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises (introduced through The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002) seeks to prevent further exposure to asbestos with the aim of saving 5000
lives over the next 50 years.

Part one of this video: How are you today? provides a hard-hitting portrayal of the final days in the life of a building worker suffering from mesothelioma. It graphically demonstrates the potential outcome for those
who are unknowingly being exposed to asbestos fibres in their day-to-day work.

The key message is the importance of checking whether material contains asbestos before starting work.

Part two of the video How are you managing? shows how a dutyholder might address the requirements of the duty to manage from the perspective of a large and a small organisation.

The clear message is that the scale of the task in complying with the regulation will vary depending on the size and complexity of the premises. The duty has been specifically designed to be proportionate, only requiring
costs where the risk demands it.
